Scholarly Article Post

In the article "Problems of Gender and History in the Teaching of "Things Fall Apart,"" by Cobham, Rhonda, Bloom, Harold, it talks about the different feelings that a teacher and class had over the book. There were different personalties in this article and different feelings about the book. Some agreed that the part about beating your wife was outrageous while others understood and realize that that was the tradition in that african town. The article goes in depth about the book and how it relates to the bible.The articles continue to say how achebe is sexist for writing this book and Emecheta of being historically inaccurate and how in the end they should change the name of the book.

"With a father like Unoka, Okonkwo did not...compatible life and shameful death."


Okonkwo tried so hard to be the opposite of his father, his father was weak and lazy and Okonkwo was strong and a leader. Everyone wants to be better than their parents and achieve more than what they parents achieve,and I think Okonkwo achieve it.

"No matter how prosperous a man was, if he was unable to rule his women and his children (and especially his women) he was not really a man."

This quote is humorous to me because I told my mom and she was annoyed by it lol. To me this quote is basically saying in order to be a man you have to be able to control everyone, but that doesn't make you a man it means something is seriously wrong with you and you will never be loved because you want to be feared. Which in this book case that makes you a man, which is crazy.

"Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To show affection was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength."

This is a great quote because it relates to so many men today. If you show any emotion other than anger you will be labeled "sorry" or "weak." Which is crazy because to me showing your emotion is a sign of you being mature and a great man.

"The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart."

To me this quote explains the whole book, it tells you Okonkwo side of it anyways, but i think that it is no one fault but the clans' fault because if they were not already in turmoil then the "white men" wouldn't be able to take over in the first place.

"Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness"

This was a great quote to me because it focuses on how Okonkwo became the man that he is, and how his whole life was dominated by fear and weakness, but to me that is why he is cruel.
